SAFETY EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN AT SCHOOL

Along with the conventional education given to the child at the school, the child should be exposed to safety education as well at the school.

The child should be taught about safety education on the following lines:

  • The child should be taught to always TAKE A FRIEND when walking or riding your bike to and from school. It is always safe to be in the company of other children. The children should be made to walk and ride in well-lit areas, and never take short cuts.

  • It is always considered safe to stay with a group while waiting at the bus stop. If anyone bothers while going to or from school, encourage the child to inform his parents or a trusted adult about the incident.

  • The child feels uncomfortable with someone he doesn’t know or feel comfortable with offers like a ride, teach him to say NO. Never allow hitchhike, and only accept a ride from someone if parents have told you it is okay.

  • If the child complains of someone following him on foot, teach him to get away from him or her as quickly as he can. If someone follows him in a car, teach him to turn around and go in the other direction. Always be sure to TELL your parents or a trusted adult what happened.

  • If someone tries to take the child somewhere, teach him to quickly get away and yell, “This person is trying to take me away!” or “This person is not my father (mother)!”

  • The child should be taught to never leave school with someone he don’t feel comfortable with or know. Teach him to always CHECK FIRST with his parents or another trusted adult. Explain a situation where in the stranger tells him that there is an emergency and they want him to go with them, teach him always to CHECK FIRST before he does anything. Make sure he TELLS a trusted adult if you notice someone you don’t know hanging around.

  • The child should leave items and clothing with his name on them at home. He should be prepared not to get confused or fooled if someone he don’t know calls out his name.

  • Parents should ensure that the child informs any change in their plans after school, always CHECK FIRST with parents. They should discipline the child never to play in parks, malls, or video arcades. Make sure he has his parents’ permission, and they know where he is going to be. The child should be taught never accept money or gifts from anyone until he CHECKS FIRST with your parents.
